What is the APAAR ID (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry)?

APAAR—Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry—is a unique 12-digit digital identification system that serves as a permanent academic identity for every student in India. It is part of the 'One Nation, One Student ID' initiative, aligned with India's National Education Policy 2020. Instead of collecting multiple certificates and marksheets, students can securely store, manage, and access all their academic credentials—including scorecards, marksheets, gradesheets, degrees, diplomas, certificates, and co-curricular achievements—in a single digital location (अपार आईडी कैसे बनाएं).

An APAAR ID is automatically linked to a student's DigiLocker account, a secure government platform, so that records are protected and always accessible. The system tracks academic progress and removes duplicity, fraud, and inefficiency from education records across schools, boards, and higher education institutions. Whether a student transfers schools, appears for board examinations, or applies to university, their academic history travels with them as a single, verified digital identity.

Why the APAAR ID is used for school records and board registration

Schools and boards use APAAR ID to streamline student record management and board registration. When a student enrols for Class IX or later, the school links the student's identity to APAAR so that all academic progress—including internal marks, final board examination results, and skill-based achievements—is recorded under a single, permanent identifier. This eliminates errors caused by name variations, duplicate admissions, or lost certificates.

For board exams, APAAR serves as the official backbone of student data. The board uses APAAR records to issue marksheets, store results, and maintain academic history. A student's board registration is tied to their APAAR ID, so when the board publishes results, issues digital marksheets, or processes certificate requests, everything is tied to that 12-digit code. This ensures that each student has one authoritative record across multiple boards and institutions.

The system also protects students: if a certificate is lost or damaged, the original digital record in APAAR and DigiLocker serves as proof. For scholarship applications, college admissions, and employment verification, institutions can confirm credentials directly against APAAR, reducing fraud and speeding up verification processes.

How an APAAR ID is created for a student, step by step

  1. 1

Parents are informed about the APAAR ID program by the school. The school conducts sessions to explain how APAAR works, its benefits for the student, and how records will be stored and shared securely.

  2. 2

Parents voluntarily complete and submit a written consent form at the school, confirming permission for the student's APAAR ID to be created. For minors, parental consent is mandatory. The consent form includes acknowledgment of data-sharing policies and privacy protections.

  3. 3

The school verifies the student's demographic details against the UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) database. The student's name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and parents' names are checked for accuracy and completeness.

  4. 4

The school matches the student's name in UDISE+ records with the name on the student's Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar number and name must be correct; if there is a mismatch, the school works with the student and parents to resolve the discrepancy before proceeding.

  5. 5

Once all details are verified and the names match across UDISE+ and Aadhaar, the UDISE system automatically generates the unique 12-digit APAAR ID linked to the student's Permanent Enrollment Number (PEN).

  6. 6

The newly created APAAR ID is immediately pushed to the student's DigiLocker account. The student can log in to DigiLocker using their Aadhaar number and view their APAAR ID card and associated academic records.

APAAR ID FAQ

Do I need an APAAR ID to take board exams? Yes. APAAR ID is the foundation of board student registration and record management in India. Your board exam registration, hall ticket, and results will all be linked to your APAAR ID, so it is essential for Class X and XII examinations.

What if my name in Aadhaar does not match my school records? The school must work with you and your parents to correct either the UDISE+ or Aadhaar record so that both names are identical. You cannot proceed without a match. If Aadhaar correction is needed, your parents should apply for a name update through the Aadhaar portal or visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

Will my APAAR ID be shared with private companies? No. APAAR operates on consent-based information sharing. Your data is shared only with government agencies, educational institutions, and authorized bodies that you (or your parents, if you are a minor) have given permission to access. Private companies do not have access unless you explicitly consent.

Can I access my APAAR ID after school? Yes. Your APAAR ID remains active throughout your life and is linked to your DigiLocker account. After school, you can use it for college admissions, job applications, skill certifications, and lifelong learning programs. The ID travels with you.

What should I do if my APAAR ID creation fails? The UDISE system will display an error message explaining the issue—usually a data mismatch or missing information. Common problems include missing Aadhaar number, name mismatch, incomplete parental consent, or incorrect PEN. Check the error carefully, have your school correct the data, and resubmit for generation.
