Rechecking & scrutiny of board marks: how to apply after results
How to request scrutiny, rechecking, or re-evaluation of your board exam marks after results are published, including fees, eligibility, timelines, and what each process covers.

Scrutiny, rechecking, re-totalling, verification — what each board calls it
Indian school boards offer post-result mark verification options to address totalling errors, unmarked answers, or calculation mistakes. However, different boards use different names for these processes, which can be confusing.
Most state boards and CISCE use the term "scrutiny" or "rechecking" for the first stage of verification. The UP Board calls it scrutiny (स्क्रूटनी), while West Bengal calls it Post Publication Scrutiny (PPS) or Post Publication Review (PPR). CISCE uses the term "recheck" followed by a separate "re-evaluation" stage if the student remains unsatisfied.
All these terms refer broadly to the same process: checking that your answer book was marked correctly, that no answer was left unmarked, and that all marks were totalled and transferred to the cover page accurately. A second stage, where available, allows a complete re-evaluation by a fresh examiner — this is where your individual answer marks may be re-examined.
How to apply for scrutiny or rechecking of your board marks, step by step
- 1
Check your result on the official board portal or in your result notification to confirm you wish to apply for scrutiny.
- 2
Wait for the official notification announcing the scrutiny window. The board will release an official circular with dates, procedures, and payment details.
- 3
Visit your board's official results portal or scrutiny application portal. For CISCE, go to results.cisce.org; for UP Board, visit results.upmsp.edu.in/ResultScrutiny.aspx.
- 4
Log in or register with your roll number, date of birth, and other required details as specified by your board.
- 5
Select the subjects for which you wish to request scrutiny. You may apply for some or all subjects.
- 6
Pay the prescribed fee through the specified payment method (online or via challan, depending on your board). Fees are non-refundable unless there is a change in your marks.
- 7
Download or take note of your application receipt and confirmation number.
- 8
Track the status of your scrutiny request through the board's portal or by checking regular announcements.
- 9
Once the board declares scrutiny results, download your revised marksheet if marks have changed, or access the result notification if they remain the same.
When the scrutiny window opens and what it typically costs
The scrutiny window usually opens a few days after the result declaration. Most boards announce the start date in their official result notice or through a separate notification published on their website.
CISCE opens a short recheck window soon after results are declared, and a separate re-evaluation window opens after the recheck outcome — each stays open only briefly, so watch the official notice. State boards vary — UP Board's scrutiny window has typically run in May, while West Bengal's window has run from late May into early June.
Each board sets its own fee structure. CISCE and each state board set a per-subject fee for rechecking and re-evaluation in the official notice; the amounts are revised from time to time, so confirm the current fee before you pay. Most state boards charge a smaller fee per subject, often in the range of a few hundred rupees, though the exact amount is announced fresh each year in the official notice. Do not rely on fees from previous years — always check the current year's notification.
Payment methods vary by board. CISCE accepts online payment on its portal; UP Board accepts online payment and challan-based payment; West Bengal requires payment via challan to the board's account. Check your board's notification for the exact payment method.
All fees are non-refundable, except that if your marks increase after scrutiny, the scrutiny fee may be waived or refunded by some boards — verify this in your board's notice.
What rechecking does and does not change
Scrutiny and rechecking (स्क्रूटनी / रीचेकिंग) do NOT re-evaluate the marking of your individual answers. A fresh examiner does not look at your answers and decide if they deserve more marks. Instead, scrutiny checks only the administrative and arithmetic aspects of the marking process.
Specifically, scrutiny verifies that: every answer in your booklet was marked (no unmarked answers), the marks awarded by the examiner for each answer were correctly added together, and the total marks were correctly transferred from the answer book to the cover page. It is a check for calculation and administrative errors only.
If scrutiny finds an error — for example, that an answer was left unmarked, or that marks were miscalculated or not transferred correctly — then your total marks will be corrected. However, if no error is found, your marks remain unchanged.
If you remain unsatisfied after scrutiny, some boards (notably CISCE, and some state boards) allow you to request re-evaluation, where a different examiner will re-read and re-mark your answers. Re-evaluation can result in marks increasing, staying the same, or even decreasing — the new marks are then final.
Once scrutiny or recheck results are declared, they are final. You cannot request another scrutiny for the same subject in the same examination year.
Board marks rechecking FAQ
Can I apply for scrutiny in only some subjects? Yes. You can choose to apply for scrutiny in any combination of subjects you wrote. You will pay the prescribed fee for each subject you select.
- Can my marks decrease after scrutiny? If you apply for scrutiny (re-totalling and error-checking only), your marks cannot decrease — scrutiny only corrects errors, it does not re-evaluate answers. However, if you apply for re-evaluation (a fresh review of your answers), marks can increase, stay the same, or decrease, and the new marks are final.
- What if I miss the scrutiny deadline? Once the scrutiny window closes, applications are not accepted. You cannot apply after the deadline has passed. Mark the deadline in your calendar and apply before the board closes the portal.
- Do I need my school's help to apply? Most boards allow direct online application through their portal, so you can apply independently. However, some boards may require your school to process the application on your behalf. Check your board's official notification to see if school involvement is required.
- How long does scrutiny take? Results are usually declared within 2–4 weeks of the scrutiny window closing, though this varies by board. Check the official timeline in the board's notification.
