NIOS admission for Class 10 & 12: streams, blocks, eligibility requirements, and step-by-step online application process with fee windows.
Reviewed July 2026
Who can take NIOS admission for Class 10 and Class 12
For Class 10 (Secondary course), you need to have passed Class 8 and be at least 14 years old—or provide a self-declaration confirming you are ready to study at secondary level. Proof of age can come from a birth certificate issued by your municipal authority, Aadhaar card, or other government-issued documents.
For Class 12 (Senior Secondary course), you must hold a Class 10 certificate from a recognised board in India. If your secondary qualification is from outside India, you will need an equivalence certificate from the relevant embassy.
NIOS does not have a formal entrance exam; eligibility is document-based. Age verification is essential—if you cannot provide official proof of being 14+ for Class 10, a medical certificate from a government hospital can substitute.
NIOS streams — Stream 1 (fresh), Stream 2 (failed), Stream 3 & 4
Stream 1 (fresh admission) is open year-round for learners enrolling for the first time in NIOS at either secondary or senior secondary level. This is the primary pathway for students switching from conventional schooling. Stream 1 learners receive Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) and enroll in regular public examinations.
Stream 2 is for learners who took their Class 10 or Class 12 exam at another board but did not pass, and now want to reappear through NIOS. Stream 2 admission typically opens for a limited window (usually May–June), and students appear in the same examination year (October–November).
Stream 3 (Secondary On-Demand Examination System) is available throughout the year for learners who either passed Class 10 elsewhere and want to upgrade specific subjects, or failed the public exam and prefer flexible testing through NIOS's on-demand examination system (ODES). Stream 3 is for secondary level only.
Stream 4 mirrors Stream 3 but operates at the senior secondary (Class 12) level. It serves both learners seeking subject upgrades and those who did not clear senior secondary elsewhere. On-demand examinations are scheduled throughout the year except during April, May, October, and November.
Block 1 vs Block 2 admission — which exam each maps to
NIOS divides the academic year into two admission blocks, each with its own enrollment window and linked examination schedule. Understanding which block aligns with your preparation timeline is crucial.
Block 1 typically runs from mid-March to mid-September. Learners admitted in Block 1 are eligible to sit public examinations the following April–May. This block suits students who want to use the winter and early spring months for study.
Block 2 runs from mid-September to mid-March. Learners admitted in Block 2 are eligible for public examinations in October–November of the same year, making this block shorter in terms of study time. Some students choose Block 2 if they are ready to appear quickly or want to use the monsoon months for preparation.
Note: Streams 2, 3, and 4 may have different block schedules or allow year-round enrollment; check the official portal for your specific stream.

How the NIOS admission fee and late-fee windows work
NIOS charges different admission fees depending on your course (Class 10 vs Class 12), number of subjects, and category (general, female, SC/ST, ex-servicemen, or handicapped). The prescribed fee structure is published at the start of each block and is available on the official SDMIS portal.
The standard admission fee covers registration and coursework but excludes exam fees, which are charged separately when you register for examinations. Formative assessment fees and tutor-marked assignment (TMA) fees apply only to Stream 1 learners.
Late-fee windows are structured in phases. Typically, applicants who register after the initial deadline but within a grace period incur progressive late charges. For instance, a late fee may apply to registrations in the first 15 days after the primary deadline, a higher late fee for registrations in the next 15 days, and an even higher charge for the final permitted period. The exact amounts and dates depend on the block and year; always check the official SDMIS portal for the current block's schedule.
An application form fee is charged separately and is non-refundable. Plan your registration to fall within the primary window if possible to avoid cumulative late charges.
NIOS admission — typical block windows to expect
Block 1 typically opens for admissions around mid-March and closes around mid-September. During this six-month window, prospective learners can register at any point. Examinations for Block 1 learners are scheduled for the following April–May.
Block 2 admissions usually commence in mid-September and continue until mid-March. Students admitted in Block 2 appear for public examinations in October–November, so the study period is shorter (roughly one year total from admission to exam).
Stream 2 admission is time-limited and typically opens only in May–June each year. This short window is announced by NIOS, and registered learners must appear in the October–November examination of the same year.
Streams 3 and 4 (on-demand) remain open year-round; you can apply whenever ready. However, on-demand examinations themselves are not held during April, May, October, and November, so plan your readiness accordingly.
Notification dates and exact opening/closing dates may vary slightly each year. Always check the official NIOS website and SDMIS portal for the precise dates of each block.
NIOS admission FAQ
- Can I apply to NIOS if I am already enrolled in another board's school? Yes, NIOS does not prevent dual enrollment. However, you must inform your current school and be aware that dual enrollment might not be permitted by your school's rules. Clarify with your school before enrolling in NIOS.
- What if I don't have my Class 8 certificate for Class 10 admission? You can provide a self-declaration affirming that you are prepared to study secondary-level subjects. This is an official alternative to a formal Class 8 certificate, as long as you meet the age requirement.
- Can I apply to Stream 1 and Stream 2 simultaneously? No, you must choose one stream per block. Dual enrollment in different NIOS streams during the same block is not permitted, but you can enroll in a different stream in a subsequent block if needed.
- What happens if I miss the Block 1 or Block 2 deadline? If you miss the primary registration window but are still within the late-fee window, you can register by paying the prescribed late fee. Once all windows close, you must wait for the next block (or apply to Stream 2/3/4 if eligible).
- How long does admission confirmation take? After successful payment, your admission is confirmed immediately, and you receive a registration number via email. You can download your admission letter from the portal the same day or within 24 hours.
