What is the NIOS On-Demand Exam (ODES)?
The On-Demand Examination System (ODES), also called On-Demand Exam or एनआईओएस ऑन डिमांड परीक्षा, is NIOS's mechanism for allowing you to sit for your board exam at times other than the regularly scheduled public examination windows. Unlike the standard October–November or April–May public exams that happen once or twice yearly, NIOS conducts on-demand exams during multiple months, providing flexibility for learners who need to retake failed subjects, appear for missed exams, or accelerate their studies.
ODES is available to eligible registered learners at NIOS headquarters in Noida, Regional Centres across India, and designated Kendriya Vidyalayas. You can choose your exam centre when you register, giving you control over where and when you sit for your exam within the available windows.
When the On-Demand Exam is available (and when it is not)
NIOS runs on-demand exams throughout most of the year, but with a critical restriction: there is no on-demand examination during April, May, October, and November. This closure happens because those months coincide with the public examination schedule, when NIOS's infrastructure is focused on conducting the regular board exams for all admitted learners.
The months when ODES is available are: January–March, June–September, and December. Specific registration and exam windows are announced on the NIOS website roughly a month before each exam cycle begins. For example, the January–March window typically opens for registration in late December, and you must register before the closing date to sit for that exam session.
Always check the official NIOS website or notification portal for the exact opening and closing dates of registration for each on-demand window, as these may vary slightly year to year.
Who can take it: Stream 3 & 4 eligibility
NIOS on-demand exams are primarily designed for learners in Stream 3 (Secondary level) and Stream 4 (Senior Secondary level), both of which are open admissions streams. You do not need to have taken regular NIOS admission to access ODES if you fall into these categories.
Stream 3 is for you if you have already passed the Secondary Examination (Class 10 equivalent) from any recognized board—whether CBSE, state board, or other. You can use on-demand exams to take partial admission in one to four new subjects, update your qualification, or retake subjects you failed in any board's Class 10 exam. You don't need prior NIOS enrolment to register for Stream 3 ODES.
Stream 4 is for learners who have completed Senior Secondary (Class 12) or higher from any recognized board or university. Like Stream 3, you can take partial admission in one to four subjects, or retake any failed subjects from your previous Class 12 exam. Stream 4 on-demand exams are also open throughout the year via the admission system.
Registered learners of Stream-1 Blocks I & II (regular two-year NIOS learners) who have completed their first public examination are also eligible for ODES, allowing them to clear remaining or failed subjects outside the public exam windows.
Note: Stream 3 and Stream 4 admissions themselves are open year-round, so you can take admission for these streams at any time and then register for an available on-demand exam window.
Transfer of Credit: carrying passed subjects forward
NIOS's Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility, also known as क्रेडिट ट्रांसफर, allows you to use subjects you've already passed from another board to count towards your NIOS qualification, reducing the number of subjects you need to appear for at NIOS.
If you are taking Stream 3 admission at NIOS (using an existing Secondary pass from another board) or Stream 4 admission (using an existing Senior Secondary pass from another board), you can apply for TOC in up to four subjects at NIOS or up to two subjects if you are transferring from another board—whichever applies to your case. The transferred subjects must be available in the NIOS scheme of studies and must have been passed within the last five years.
To apply for TOC, you must submit your original marksheet (issued by your previous board) when you submit your admission form and send it to your regional centre. NIOS does not accept laminated or photocopied marksheets; you must provide the original. You will also be required to pay a TOC fee of Rs 100 per subject for each subject you are transferring. Note this fee is separate from exam and admission fees.
When you use TOC, those transferred subjects appear on your final NIOS certificate as 'pass' but you do not sit for exams in those subjects. This significantly reduces your exam load and allows you to focus on remaining subjects or new subjects you wish to add to your qualification.

NIOS On-Demand exam FAQ
Q: Can I take on-demand exams if I have never been admitted to NIOS? A: Yes. Stream 3 and Stream 4 are open-admission pathways, meaning you can register for these streams at any time and then book an on-demand exam in the next available window. You do not need prior NIOS enrolment; registration for the stream and exam can be done together via the online portal.
Q: What is the difference between on-demand exams and the regular public exams? A: Public exams happen in October–November and April–May and are for all regular NIOS learners. On-demand exams are available in other months (January–March, June–September, December) for learners who need flexibility, have missed deadlines, or want to accelerate. Both count towards your NIOS certificate, and the standard is identical.
Q: Can I transfer subjects passed from my school board (like CBSE or state board) to NIOS and skip those exams? A: Yes. If you apply for Transfer of Credit when you take NIOS admission, you can carry over up to four subjects from NIOS (or up to two from other boards) passed in the last five years. You will need to submit your original marksheet and pay Rs 100 per subject. You will not need to sit for exams in those transferred subjects.
Q: Is there a late fee if I miss the ODES registration deadline? A: Yes. After the prescribed registration deadline, you can still pay the exam fee along with an applicable late fee, provided you do so within the extended period announced by NIOS. The late fee amount may vary; check the official notification for the current cycle.
Q: Can I choose when I sit for my on-demand exam, or am I assigned a date? A: You choose the exam window (the month or quarter when you register), and NIOS issues an exam date within that window. You cannot pick an exact date, but by registering early in a window, you get the exam within that same window period.
