What is the NIOS TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment)?

The Tutor Marked Assignment (टीएमए) is an open-book assessment activity designed to help you practise writing answers and improve your exam preparation. Unlike formal exams, you have unlimited time to complete and submit your TMA, making it a flexible learning tool rather than a timed test.

For each subject, you receive one assignment to complete. The TMA covers key concepts from your course material and helps reinforce your understanding through self-guided work. Your teacher reviews and marks each assignment, providing feedback to guide your progress through the course.

Why TMA is mandatory: the internal-marks weightage

At the Secondary level, the TMA carries 20 marks and accounts for 20% of the total marks in the theory component of your final exam result. This means your TMA score directly influences your overall performance and final grade.

The TMA is assessed as part of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (formative assessment). Although no minimum passing marks are required specifically in the TMA itself, scoring well helps boost your internal assessment and overall aggregate. If you do not submit your TMA, you will receive zero marks for that component, which will significantly lower your internal assessment score.

How to submit your NIOS TMA to the study centre

  1. 1

Complete all questions in the Tutor Marked Assignment for each of your subjects. Refer to the assignment guidelines provided by NIOS to understand the requirements and marking scheme.

  2. 2

Download the TMA answer sheet and cover page from the NIOS SDMIS student portal at https://sdmis.nios.ac.in, or obtain a printed copy from your study centre if available.

  3. 3

Write your answers neatly in your own words. Ensure your enrollment number and study centre code are clearly filled in on the front page of the assignment.

  4. 4

Submit the completed TMA to your subject teacher at the study centre on or before the announced submission deadline. Ensure you attend on the specified date and time set by your study centre.

  5. 5

Request and obtain a dated receipt from your teacher confirming the submission of your TMA. Keep this receipt safely as proof of submission.

  6. 6

If your study centre is non-functional or closed, you may submit your TMA at the nearest Regional Centre of NIOS, which will forward it for evaluation.

NIOS TMA timing — typically before the exam

NIOS usually announces TMA submission deadlines several months before the public exam. Submission periods typically occur from early in the academic term up until a few months before the scheduled exams. The exact dates vary by academic cycle; recent deadlines have been announced for periods such as February of the exam year.

You should check the official NIOS notification on the main website or contact your study centre coordinator to confirm the current submission window. Late submissions may be accepted with an additional late fee at the discretion of NIOS, though submissions within the scheduled period are always preferred.

NIOS TMA FAQ

  • Is TMA submission compulsory? While you are technically allowed to appear in the exam without submitting TMA, you will receive zero marks for the internal assessment component if you do not submit. Submitting TMA is strongly recommended to protect your overall score.
  • Who is eligible to submit TMA? TMA is only applicable to learners admitted under Stream-I of NIOS. Students admitted under Streams II, III, or IV are not required to submit TMAs.
  • What happens if I miss the submission deadline? Late submissions may be accepted with an additional late fee, depending on NIOS policies. Contact your study centre or Regional Centre immediately if you miss the announced date.
  • Can I submit TMA after appearing in the exam? No, TMA must be submitted before the exam. Once examinations have begun, submissions are no longer accepted. Plan your submission well in advance.
  • How are TMA marks calculated and used? TMA carries 20 marks and contributes 20% to your theory marks. Your final result is based on your performance in the public exam (33% required to pass), and the TMA score is added to calculate your aggregate. Separate passing marks do not apply to TMA alone.
