Reviewed July 2026

What is the NMMS scholarship?

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) is a central government program that awards scholarships to talented students from economically weaker backgrounds. Run by the Department of School Education and Literacy, NMMS recognises merit while ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent bright students from advancing their education. The scheme provides ongoing support through Class 9, 10, 11, and 12 once a student qualifies in Class 8.

Each state and union territory conducts its own talent search examination at the end of Class 8 to select scholarship recipients. Winners receive ₹1,000 per month—totalling ₹12,000 annually—for the next four years of secondary education.

NMMS eligibility: Class 8, income limit and school type

  • Currently studying in a government school, government-aided school, or local-body school (e.g., municipal school) in Class 8.
  • Scored at least 55% marks in Class 7 final examination. Students belonging to SC/ST communities receive a 5% relaxation and need 50% marks.
  • Annual family income from all sources does not exceed the officially notified income limit as prescribed in the state notification.
  • Indian citizen. Certificate of Indian citizenship or passport required.
  • Not enrolled in fully residential government schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), or private schools (whether CBSE, CISCE, NIOS, IB, or CAIE affiliated).
  • Never received any national-level or state-level merit scholarship before.

NMMS exam pattern: MAT and SAT

To qualify, a student must score at least 40% in the aggregate of both tests combined. SC/ST students are eligible with 32% aggregate marks. In addition, the student must have achieved at least 55% in the Class 8 board examination to be considered for the award.

Some states conduct the NMMS examination under their own nomenclature—for instance, Maharashtra conducts the State Merit Scholarship Examination through MSCE, and Tamil Nadu administers it through the Directorate of Government Examinations—but the structure and syllabi align with national NMMS standards.

  • Mental Ability Test (MAT): 90 minutes, 90 questions testing verbal and non-verbal reasoning, pattern recognition, analogy, classification, numerical series, hidden figures, and critical thinking.
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): 90 minutes, 90 questions covering Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics from Class 7 and 8 curricula.

How to apply for NMMS through your state SCERT, step by step

  1. 1

Verify your eligibility. Confirm you are in Class 8 of a government, government-aided, or municipal school; have scored 55% or more in Class 7 (or 50% if SC/ST); and meet the income limit set by your state.

  2. 2

Obtain the notification and prospectus. Your school will distribute the official NMMS prospectus, or download it from your state's SCERT website or the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in). Read the specific rules for your state, as they may differ slightly.

  3. 3

Register on the National Scholarship Portal. Visit scholarships.gov.in and create a new account using your email and mobile number. Follow the One-Time Registration (OTR) process if required.

  4. 4

Complete the online application form. Fill in personal details, family income, school information, caste certificate (if applicable), and Aadhaar or enrollment ID. Save and review before submission.

  5. 5

Upload required documents. Scan and attach proof of income (property tax receipt, income certificate from revenue officer, or ITR), Class 7 marksheet, school identity proof, and other documents as specified.

  6. 6

Submit and note the application reference number. After final submission, take a screenshot or note your reference ID for tracking. Do not depend on email confirmation alone.

  7. 7

Appear for the NMMS examination. The state SCERT will announce exam dates (typically mid-year, around November–December). Receive your admit card from your school and sit the MAT and SAT as scheduled.

  8. 8

Check results on the state portal. Results are usually declared a few weeks after exams. Visit your state SCERT website or scholarships.gov.in and enter your roll number to check your merit position.

  9. 9

Confirm scholarship award and bank details. Selected students must provide or update their bank account information (SBI preferred) within the stipulated time for direct benefit transfer.

The NMMS amount and how Class 9–12 renewal works

Once selected at the end of Class 8, an NMMS scholar receives ₹1,000 per month (₹12,000 per year) directly into their bank account for the duration of Classes 9, 10, 11, and 12. The total benefit over four years is ₹48,000. Payments are made through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), usually via State Bank of India, on a regular monthly schedule.

  • Class 9 renewal: Must be promoted to Class 9 and score at least 55% in Class 8 final exams (50% for SC/ST).
  • Class 10 renewal: Must score at least 60% in the Class 9 annual exam or Class 10 board exam (55% for SC/ST). Board exams count as the final assessment.
  • Class 11 renewal: Must score at least 55% in the Class 10 board exam (50% for SC/ST).
  • Class 12 renewal: Must score at least 55% in the Class 11 final exam (50% for SC/ST).
  • No breaks in studies are permitted. If a student fails, repeats, or voluntarily discontinues, the scholarship ends permanently.
  • Marks must be achieved in the first attempt; compartmental or supplementary exams do not satisfy the requirement.
  • Annual renewal application must be submitted before the state-notified deadline (usually by August or September) through the National Scholarship Portal.
  • Good conduct and regular attendance are mandatory for continued eligibility.

NMMS scholarship FAQ

Can I apply if my family income is above the official limit? No. The income limit is strictly enforced by state authorities. You can verify your state's exact income ceiling by checking the notification published by your SCERT or state education department.

Which exam board schools are eligible? Only students from government, government-aided, or municipal schools studying a state board curriculum are eligible. CBSE, CISCE, NIOS, IB, and CAIE students cannot apply for NMMS.

When do I appear for the NMMS exam? The exam is held once a year, after Class 8 final exams conclude. Most states conduct it between November and January. Exact dates are announced by your state SCERT each academic year.

What if I fail the NMMS exam but score well in Class 8? Exam merit matters. Scoring well in Class 8 alone does not guarantee selection if you do not meet the MAT and SAT cutoff (40% aggregate, or 32% for SC/ST). You can reappear in the following year if you remain in Class 8.

Is there any fee to apply or appear for the exam? No. NMMS is a free scholarship. There is no application fee, examination fee, or registration charge.
