What is the UP Board compartment / improvement exam?

The UP Board compartment exam, also called the supplementary or second-chance exam (पूरक परीक्षा), allows Class 10 and Class 12 students to retake a failed subject without losing an academic year. It is conducted by UPMSP (Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad) separately from the main board exam cycle.

Students who receive an E1 grade (21–32 marks out of 100) or who have failed in one or two subjects become eligible for the compartment exam. The improvement exam (सुधार परीक्षा) is a separate opportunity for students who have already passed all subjects but wish to reappear in one subject to improve their marks and overall result.

Who is eligible and how many subjects you can reappear in

  • Class 10 students: Eligible to reappear in one failed subject if they received an E1 grade in it, or if they failed that subject in the main exam.
  • Class 12 students (all streams): Eligible to reappear in one subject per compartment cycle if they received an E1 grade or failed in the main exam.
  • Improvement exam: Students who passed all subjects are eligible to reappear in one subject to improve their marks (available only if the board allows improvement registration alongside compartment registration).
  • E2 grade (0–20 marks) or failure in three or more subjects: Not eligible for the compartment exam; students must reappear in the next main exam cycle.
  • Passing requirement: Clear the compartment subject by scoring at least 33% marks overall (minimum 23 out of 70 in theory and 10 out of 30 in practical or internal assessment, if applicable).

Registration for the compartment exam usually begins in late May and closes by mid-June, with the actual exams held in the latter part of July.

Admit cards are released about one week before the exam. Results are usually published in early August. Exact dates vary each year based on the board's official exam calendar; check the UPMSP website for the current year's notification.

UP Board compartment exam FAQ

Can I appear in more than one subject in the compartment exam? No, you can reappear in one subject per compartment cycle. If you failed in two subjects and both are in the E1 range or failed category, you must choose one and take it in that exam; the other subject must be cleared in a later cycle or the next main exam.

Will my passed subjects' marks be carried forward? Yes. If you pass the compartment exam, only the new marks from that subject will be added to your result. Your marks in all other subjects from the main exam remain unchanged and are retained.

Is there a fee for the compartment exam? Yes, there is a prescribed fee, which varies by class. Check the official UPMSP notification for the exact amount for the current year. The fee can usually be paid online or via a treasury challan through your school.

Can I take the improvement exam if I already passed? Yes, improvement exams allow students who passed in all subjects to reappear in one subject to improve their score. This is separate from the compartment exam and is available only if the board formally opens an improvement-exam window in that year.

What happens if I fail the compartment exam? If you do not pass the compartment subject (score below 33%), you will need to reappear in the next main exam cycle or wait for the next compartment exam if the board conducts one.
